In December 2014, I organized a family trip to Mazatlán, Sinaloa, to visit my father’s birthplace and my grandmother’s place of origin—the nearby rural mining settlement of Pánuco, located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. My grandparents had migrated while my father was still an infant to another mining center in the state of Sonora and, as a result, he had little connection to the place. I had grown up hearing fragmented tales about the Vizcarras and this town. This journey was an opportunity to learn more about the family history--and to conduct a camera test. As it turned out, however, our trip and this film were fraught from start to finish. This auto-ethnographic short explores family stories and memory, in the context of subtly conspicuous drug-trade related violence and other narco specters.
En diciembre del 2014 organicé un viaje familiar a Mazatlán, Sinaloa, para visitar el pueblo donde nació mi padre y el lugar de origen de mi abuela: el asentamiento rural minero de Pánuco, ubicado en la Sierra Madre Occidental en México. Mis abuelos habían emigrado cuando mi padre aún era un infante a otro centro minero en el estado de Sonora y, como resultado, ahora mi padre tenía poca conexión con el lugar. Yo crecí escuchando fragmentos de historias sobre los Vizcarra y este pueblo. Este viaje fue una oportunidad para aprender más sobre la historia familiar y para realizar una prueba de cámara. Sin embargo, nuestro viaje y esta película estuvieron llenos de tensión de principio a fin. Este cortometraje autoetnográfico explora las historias familiares y la memoria, en el contexto de la violencia relacionada con el narcotráfico sutilmente visible y otros narcoespectros.
